At Purple Octopus we like clear and straight forward instructions, so here is a step-by-step guide for using Google Site Kit to install Google Tag Manager (GTM) on your website, then linking your Facebook Pixel and setting up events:
Step 1: Install Google Site Kit
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Plugins > Add New, search for Google Site Kit, and install it.
- Activate and follow the on-screen instructions to authenticate your Google account.
Step 2: Connect Google Tag Manager (GTM) with Site Kit
- Within Site Kit, click Settings.
- Under Connected Services, select Google Tag Manager.
- Connect GTM by signing in and selecting your GTM account and container.
Step 3: Integrate Facebook Pixel with Google Tag Manager
- Log in to your Google Tag Manager account.
- Click Add a new tag.
- Name your tag clearly, e.g., “Facebook Pixel”.
- Click Tag Configuration, choose Custom HTML.
- Paste your Facebook Pixel code here (copied from Meta Business Suite > Events Manager).
Step 4: Set Up Triggers for Your Facebook Pixel
- Below the Pixel code, under Triggering, choose All Pages (this fires the Pixel site-wide).
- To track specific events (e.g., button clicks, form submissions), create additional tags with targeted triggers:
- Click New Trigger, select a trigger type (e.g., Clicks or Form Submissions).
- Configure based on your event needs (e.g., URL clicks, form IDs).
Step 5: Publish and Verify
- Click Save and then Submit to publish your changes.
- Ordinarily we would verify the installation by using Meta Pixel Helper (Chrome extension) to check if the Pixel and events fire correctly. However, the issue with the Pixel not appearing on the website means we cannot do this.
- Test the events from with GTM to see if they are firing correctly.
Now your Pixel events are tracked seamlessly using Google Tag Manager via Site Kit!
